Holmes DRIVE pArking Deck
The George M. Holmes Convocation Center was completed in 2000 to accommodate Appalachian State University's growing academic, athletic, and community needs. The building combines brick masonry, precast concrete, expansive glazing, and metal panel systems to complement the campus's traditional architectural character while expressing the scale and flexibility of a modern multipurpose facility.Since then, like many southern universities, they have continued to grow and add infrastructure to meet their needs. This parking deck on Holmes Drive was one of their newest additions and added to serve the convocation center and surrounding campus. Delivered as a design-build with New Atlantic Contracting, it was one of my projects while at Little Diversified Architectural Consulting. 
Rather than becoming a visual landmark, it was designed to defer to the Holmes Convocation Center and adjacent academic buildings, but still hold its own in terms of being an architectural compliment. Its use of brick, regular structural bays, screened façades, and the pedestrian bridge reflects a contemporary campus planning strategy: treat parking infrastructure as part of the architectural ensemble rather than as purely engineering infrastructure.
